Dodgy – Hello Beautiful

15 June 2026

Album Review by John Rawstron

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about hearing a new Dodgy album. More than three decades after emerging as one of the defining bands of the Britpop era, they continue to make music with the same warmth, melody and optimism that first won them a devoted following. Their latest album, Hey Beautiful, is a shining example of a band that understands exactly who they are while still finding fresh ways to connect with listeners.

From the very first listen, Hey Beautiful feels like an album made with genuine passion and purpose. Rather than chasing contemporary trends or attempting to recreate past glories, Dodgy focus on what they do best: crafting beautifully melodic songs filled with heart, honesty and irresistible hooks.

The album is built on strong songwriting. Every track carries the kind of effortless melodic charm that has always been a hallmark of the band’s sound. The choruses are memorable without feeling forced, and the lyrics strike a balance between thoughtful reflection and uplifting positivity. In a musical landscape that can often feel cynical, Hey Beautiful offers something refreshingly sincere.

Musically, the album is rich and inviting.

Acoustic guitars sit comfortably alongside shimmering electric textures, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary. The production is polished but never sterile, allowing the songs to breathe naturally.

There’s a warmth throughout the record that makes it feel instantly familiar, like reconnecting with an old friend after years apart.  Nigel Clark’s vocals remain one of the band’s greatest strengths. His voice carries a sense of authenticity that perfectly suits the material, whether he’s delivering a soaring chorus or a more intimate lyrical moment. There’s a confidence in the performances across the album that comes from years of experience, but the band still sound energised and fully invested in every song.

One of the album’s most impressive qualities is its consistency.  There aren’t any obvious weak moments. Instead, Hey Beautiful unfolds as a complete listening experience, rewarding those who take the time to absorb it from start to finish. Themes of hope, resilience, love and appreciation run throughout the record, giving it a cohesion that many modern albums lack.

What stands out most, however, is the sense of joy that runs through the entire project. Dodgy have always possessed an ability to create music that lifts the spirit, and Hey Beautiful continues that tradition. Even in its quieter moments, there’s an underlying optimism that makes the album feel genuinely life-affirming.

For long-time fans, Hey Beautiful will feel like a welcome reminder of everything that made Dodgy special in the first place. For newer listeners, it serves as proof that great songwriting never goes out of style. This is not an album trying to relive the past; it’s a confident and accomplished collection of songs from a band that still has plenty to offer.

In a year crowded with new releases, Hey Beautiful stands out for its honesty, craftsmanship and enduring melodic appeal. It’s an album that invites repeated listens and leaves a lasting smile long after the final track fades away.
